Q: Hello Bill (and Michelle)! I have been a longtime follower and really enjoy all the great advice you both have! Bill, this is a fantastic idea to give readers a free hair consultation. Thank you so much!

I love to play with my hair but am never quite sure I'm doing the right thing. I've included several pictures to give you an idea of what I've had in the past. I am 5'6", with an average build and blue eyes. My hair is somewhat fine, somewhat thick and can be quite wavy. I think it's easiest to manage when I style it wavy—because I don't do much to it at all! Just air-dry and some product to manage.

Sarah's darker colour and shorter style.

It has been dyed almost every colour I can think of, even pink in recent months. My natural colour is probably somewhere between strawberry blonde and brownish red. I do struggle with covering greys!

Sarah's longer, highlighted hair.

I also struggle with length. Right now, my hair is the longest it's been in a while, and I want to chop it off all the time! But I also get compliments on the longer length and blonder highlights. I also really liked it when it was a bit darker, but I'm not sure if that's the most flattering colour on me, since I tend to have paler skin.

Sarah's shag cut with bangs.

What advice do you have for me? Keep trying to grow or stick with my favourite long bob style? Keep up with the blonde highlights or go with an all-over colour? Thanks so much for taking the time to read! — Sarah

A: Sarah, you are a wonderful chameleon. Most any style and colour would suit you.

I'm digging the first picture, of your dark hair with the side bang. Your eye colour, skin tone and smile rock this pretty look for you. The length shows off your neck and frames your jawline.

Here are two blonde, longer bang versions:

Léa Seydoux at the 2013 Cannes photocall for 'Grand Central.'

Julia Stiles at the 2013 Producers Guild Awards.

Your long, soft tresses with the highlights are super-sweet in the second picture. Pulling your long hair back into a loose, soft pony will show off your neck and jawline:

Jessica Biel at the 2009 premiere of 'Planet 51'.

Your third photo is a super-cool shag cut that I really love on you. Don't waste your time, this rocks your face and frames your eyes. This is the version I am most interested in for you, and colour as well:

I hope you will find inspiration in this consult.
