Zendaya may be one of Gen Z's biggest stars—but when it comes to her skincare routine, she's remarkably low-maintenance.
"Usually I'll just cleanse, tone, moisturize, and move on. Less is more when it comes to taking care of your skin. But... even though I tend to keep the routine basic, I try new products all the time and I enjoy the ritual [of it]," the 24-year-old revealed in interviews with People, Seventeen and British Vogue.
Still, that doesn't mean her seemingly flawless skin is always well-behaved. While you can never tell, she does deal with the occasional bout of acne. "My hormonal breakouts popping up every month unwelcome, just when I think I got my skin on lock," she recently complained on Twitter, and in a 2015 chat with Twist, she opened up about "annoying" back acne.
Keeping it real extends to her makeup routine, too—or lack thereof. While Zendaya is well-known for her wildly creative looks on the red carpet, you'll usually find her au naturel in real life. "I'm very proud of my skin and my face, and I have no problem not wearing makeup. I don't wear makeup because I feel like I need to cover myself up or because I don't feel confident. I wear makeup because it's fun; it's like painting on my face," she explained to Elle.
And the secret to her famous glowing selfies? "It's all about the sun," she told InStyle. "Get in front of it and let the rays hit you. That and also be heavily moisturized."
Here are the key products Zendaya uses to feel confident in her skin, day and night.
Zendaya’s Morning Skincare Routine
Lancôme Miel-En-Mousse Foaming Cleansing Makeup Remover: "I try not to use a lot on my skin, just cleanser and SPF. This cleanser is targeted specifically for my skin type."
SheaMoisture African Black Soap Acne-Prone Face & Body Bar: "After a shower I wash my face with a cleanser. [I use] African black soap."
Thayers Rose Petal Facial Toner: "I follow up with toner, moisturizer and lip balm."
Lancôme UV Expert Aquagel Defense 50 Sunscreen SPF 50: "SPF, SPF, SPF! This is absolutely my ultimate nonnegotiable. I'm really loving the Lancôme UV Expert Aquagel SPF 50. It's amazing on its own, but also serves as a really great primer under makeup."
Lancôme Rénergie Lift Multi-Action Lifting and Firming Cream SPF 15: "Lancôme has, like, a billion great skincare products, and there's one in a purple bottle that has SPF in it. I try to remember to put it on every day."
CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30: "Wearing SPF is No. 1. Everybody, wear your SPF!"
Mario Badescu Oil Free Moisturizer SPF 30: "I never skip moisturizer—I feel like my face would just crack in half. This moisturizer protects against sun damage, doesn't clog my pores, and contains green tea extract, a great antioxidant!"
MAC Bronzing Powder: "I mix a lot of different colours to create the right shades for my skin. I was encouraged by my fans to not wear so much makeup. You know, especially being a teenager, we like to think that we need makeup every day, even for going to school—like, I can't go outside without my eyeliner. It's weird! I don't know why we do that. So, I enforced this whole natural thing."
MAC Mineralize Skinfinish: "MAC's bronzer and their Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle and Gold Deposit leaves my face looking flawless."
5. Lip Balm:
Aquaphor Healing Ointment: "A tube of Aquaphor—I carry it on me at all times. It moisturizes my lips at all times and looks like clear gloss. If you have a good lip balm, you can use it as a highlighter for your cheeks as well. It's a double whammy."
Pat McGrath Labs Skin Fetish Highlighter & Balm Duo: "I dab Aquaphor where I want my highlight to be. Then I put my highlighter on top and boom!"
7. Face Mist:
Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater: "This gives you that glow and it smells soooo good!"
Zendaya’s Nighttime Skincare Routine
1. Face Wipes:
SheaMoisture African Black Soap Clarifying Facial Wipes: "I wipe off any makeup and dirt with SheaMoisture African Black Soap facial cleansing wipes. One of my biggest tips for keeping your skin clear is to wash your makeup off before you go to bed. There are no excuses!"
Thayers Rose Petal Facial Toner: "With cotton pads, I apply rose water witch hazel as a toner. It's really refreshing and has a nice, soft scent."
3. Spot Treatment:
Tea tree oil: "[I use] tea tree oil for problem spots. I use anything that's easy on the skin. I don't like things that are too harsh or too strong."
4. Eye Cream:
Mario Badescu Ceramide Eye Gel: "This eye gel helps de-puff my under-eyes and keep the skin hydrated."
5. Face Oil:
The Body Shop Vitamin E Overnight Serum-in-Oil: "I smooth on vitamin E oil, which makes my skin look fresh and feel so soft by the morning. Vitamin E oil rejuvenates and blocks free radicals, which contribute to the aging process."
Zendaya’s Skincare Treatments
Lancôme Advanced Génifique Hydrogel Melting Mask: "I also love a pamper day and I put on a Lancôme Advanced Génifique Hydrogel Melting Mask, followed by serums and creams. It's so important to take care of yourself."
Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask to Clear Pores: "When my skin is breaking out, I use a charcoal mask like this one from Origins to wipe out blemishes."
La Mer The Intensive Revitalizing Mask: "When I want my skin to glow, I use this amazing mask."
EYES by ToGoSpa Green Tea EYES Under Eye Treatments: "This totally gets rid of puffy eyes and dark circles."
Vanessa Marc Spa: "Sometimes it's [also] fun to treat yourself with a little facial before bed. I find it therapeutic to give myself a facial and do all those extra steps: cleansing; cleansing with another cleanser; toning with, like, eight different things; then a spray; a sheet mask; a clay mask. It's a little self-care."
"I love a good massage, but the problem is most massage therapists don't apply enough pressure! People think I'm going to break in half. I'm like, you've got to do a little bit more than that, you know?"
Zendaya’s Diet, Exercise and Lifestyle
"It's bad but because I work so much, sometimes I forget to eat. I snack throughout the day, though, especially if I'm on set where there is craft service. My go-to is a cup of noodles with hot sauce. I know it's bad for me. People are like, 'Zendaya, it's high in sodium!' but it's what I want to eat. I don't drink coffee; it doesn't do anything for me. I don't drink energy drinks or soda, either. And I hate water. I'm a juice drinker but not fancy-people juice. Like Tropicana or lemonade—not fancy. I don't cook. [For dinner] I use Postmates to order food. I can have anything I want; that's the beauty of ordering food. If I'm having my favourite meal, I'll just skip right to ice cream."
"Just 'drinking more water' does not replace a skincare routine. It's good for you no doubt, but it will not make all your blemishes disappear overnight, especially for those with problem skin."
"I don't go to the gym. If we're going to be honest here, I hate the gym. I do not do gyms, it's just so boring. I can't do it. The way I get my exercise is I have to do fight choreo for my show or I dance. I have to do something that's fun for me."
"What helps me feel confident? A lot of things contribute but having a good skincare routine makes all the difference. Pampering my skin and seeing the results from that is so relaxing and really boosts my confidence. When your skin feels poppin’, you feel poppin'—you're glowing from the inside out!"
"I do think it's important to live with a sense of gratitude. You can't ever have more if you don't appreciate what you have. I always try to list the things that I am thankful for and take a moment to appreciate those things. That act helps put everything into perspective."
"Everyone has their own thing, like a form of meditation or whatever. Me, I find it very hard to just sit there and clear my brain. People say I'm crazy, but I watch Harry Potter, like, once a day. It's just calming to me, so that's my thing. People are like, 'Oh my God, Harry Potter again?' I say, 'Don't come over to my house if you don't want to watch it, because it's going to be on."
